E: Weser Tunnel as Part of the A 281 Motorway
The Weser crossing as part of the A 281 federal motorway serves as a link between the A 1 and A 27 motorways northwest of Bremen. The core section is being built as an approximately 700 m long immersed tunnel using float-in and immersion techniques between the Gröpelingen and Seehausen junctions, complemented by cut-and-cover tunnel sections. The approx. 120 m long tunnel elements are being manufactured in a dry dock in Bremerhaven. On the north side, the tunnel body is followed by an approximately 500 m long covered section, acting as a protective gallery next to the neighbouring steel plant with its slag heap. The tunnel is being constructed as a twin-cell steel-reinforced concrete rectangular frame using watertight concrete. Each cell has a clear width of 9.54 m and a clear height of 5.10 m. During the excursion, participants can visit the initial sections of the landside excavation pits and the bank retaining structures for the immersed trench in the Weser in Bremen. Depending on construction progress, the first two tunnel elements that have been transported to Bremen may also be viewed.
