D: SuedLink ElbX
The ElbX Elbe crossing is part of the SuedLink project, designed to transport wind power from northern to southern Germany. A 5.2 km tunnel is being constructed using segmental lining methods, approximately 20 metres beneath the Elbe River, with an internal diameter of four metres. The tunnel runs from Wewelsfleth to Wischhafen in Lower Saxony. Since the launch and reception shafts lie below the groundwater level, the approximately 25-metre-deep braced excavation pits were dug underwater. The tunnel boring machine is specially designed to handle variable soil conditions beneath the Elbe. From 2027, six 525 kV direct current cables will be installed in the tunnel for the SuedLink route. In addition, rails in the tunnel will enable fast and safe maintenance and repair operations with tunnel vehicles in the future. The excursion will include visits to the visitor centre, the visitor trail, the Wewelsfleth construction site facilities, the Wewelsfleth launch shaft, and, depending on the situation on site, possibly the tunnel itself.
