B: Hamburg New Metro Line U5

The construction of Hamburg’s new U5 metro line will connect 22 stations along a route of approximately 25 kilometres. As the city’s first fully automated line, it is designed to accommodate around 315,000 passengers per day. The U5 will, for the first time, link locations such as the University of Hamburg, the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, as well as districts like Bramfeld and Steilshoop to the metro network. The line will enter service in phases starting in 2029, with full completion planned by 2040. A comprehensive sustainability strategy will reduce CO2 emissions during construction by at least 70 %, and U5 operations will be emission-free, powered by 100 % green electricity. As part of the technical tour, participants will first receive an introduction to the U5 project. This will be followed by a visit to the construction site in City Nord. Here, in an open-cut excavation, structural work is underway for the future “City Nord (Stadtpark)” station, which will be 125 metres long, as well as for the tunnel section leading towards Sengelmannstraße station.
