A: Munich 2nd Core Line (Laim Station)

The Munich S-Bahn carries around 840,000 passengers a day and covers over 20 million kilometres a year. The main line, which was opened in 1972 for the Olympic Games, is thus reaching its capacity limits, especially since all S-Bahn trains have to pass under Munich city centre through one tunnel. This situation is remedied by the construction of the approximately 10 km long 2nd core line (2. S-Bahn-Stammstrecke). It is intended to relieve the existing route and serve as a fallback option in the event of a disruption. At the heart of the project are two single-track, seven-kilometre-long tunnels connecting the main station and the Ostbahnhof. In addition to the two above-ground interchange stations Laim and Leuchtenbergring, which will be rebuilt during ongoing operations, the three new underground stations Hauptbahnhof, Marienhof and Ostbahnhof will be completely rebuilt. As part of the STUVA conference, expert visits to four different construction sites of the 2. S-Bahn-Stammstrecke will be offered.

Laim Station:

In Laim, the existing above-ground S-Bahn station with one outer platform and one middle platform will be successively converted into a station with two middle platforms and extended by a fourth platform edge during ongoing operations. In addition, a northsouth connection is being built under the tracks for public transport as well as for walking and cycling, the so-called “Umweltverbundröhre” (UVR). During the technical tour, the ongoing work on the platforms and the UVR, the bracing of the 150-year-old existing structures and the complex interrelationships between the subsections will be presented.
